1. The Great Goose Bump Race, Japan
Let’s start our journey in Japan, where the Naked Festival, or Hadaka Matsuri, takes place. Thousands of men, clad only in traditional loincloths, battle it out in the freezing February cold for good luck charms thrown by a priest. Talk about a chilly tradition!
2. Monkey Buffet Festival, Thailand
In Lopburi, Thailand, thousands of monkeys are treated to a feast during the Monkey Buffet Festival. This quirky yet endearing event is a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to the monkeys, for drawing tourists to the town and for living harmoniously with the locals. It’s a day filled with fun, photos, and plenty of monkey business!
3. Giant Omelette Festival, France
Bessières, a charming town in France, has a deliciously unique tradition. Every August, residents come together for the Giant Omelette Festival, an event honoring a Napoleonic legend.
Chefs use over 15,000 eggs to create a colossal omelette in the town square. It’s a celebration of community, history, and of course, good food!
4. Tomato War, Spain
Who’s ready for a food fight? In the small town of Buñol, Spain, the last Wednesday of August means “La Tomatina.” Thousands of people gather to throw overripe tomatoes at each other in a wild, messy, and surprisingly fun event.

5. Baby Jumping, Spain
We stay in Spain for our next custom, El Colacho, or baby jumping. Here, men dressed as the devil leap over babies born during the previous year.
This centuries-old tradition is believed to cleanse the babies of original sin and ward off evil spirits. Talk about a leap of faith!
6. Wife Carrying, Finland
Off to Finland, where each summer, the Wife Carrying World Championships take place. Men race through an obstacle course carrying their wives (or any woman who agrees!).
The prize? The woman’s weight in beer. Now, that’s motivation!
7. Blackening the Bride, Scotland
Before Scottish brides and grooms say “I do,” they might find themselves covered in treacle, feathers, and more in a tradition called “blackening the bride.” The messy event is believed to ward off evil spirits that might undermine their marriage.
8. Cheese Rolling Festival, England
Finally, we’re off to the charming English countryside where each year in Gloucestershire, the Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling Festival takes place. Participants gather at the top of a steep hill, chasing a large round of Double Gloucester cheese as it barrels down the incline. The first person to cross the finish line at the bottom wins the cheese. Despite the high potential for slips, trips, and falls, this tradition draws both locals and international participants, all eager to take part in the cheesy fun!
